Saigon Siagon

Name: Ann Smith, from Edinburgh Review Date: Sun 30 September, 2007
Our family enjoyed the Dim Sum last Sunday. It is of equal quality compared with Hong Kong Chinese restaurants. There was a good choice of dumplings available to suit most tastes. Many local Chinese were dining on Sunday afternoon which is a good sign for quality.

The Chef's recommended Chow Mein (Seafood Chinese fried noodle) which I recommend highly.

On the ground floor Saigon Saigon looks like a typical Chinese buffet restaurant. Downstairs it gets interesting. As far as I know it is Edinburgh’s favourite dim sum (Chinese dumpling) restaurant. The real thing – good quality too.

I particularly enjoyed the pork buns and rice noodle dishes. The only downside is that like many Chinese restaurants they can be generous with the MSG leaving one thirsty later.

The Peach Garden is a great restaurant with excellent food and a friendly staff. I lived in Edinburgh for a year and went to the Peach Garden for no less than 5 meals a week (sometimes twice in a day). We tried other Chinese restaurants in the area, but kept coming back for the great food at this restaurant. I am a regular at Saigon Saigon. There are lots of tasty dims sums to choose from. My favourite is the steamed pork bun (char sui bau). Nice succulent pieces of pork in a bun that is just right. Aside from dim sum I especially recommend the beef haw fun (beef with flat rice noodles). These are both classic dishes that I have eaten in numerous restaurants in Hong Kong. That Saigon Saigon does them so well is a credit to the chef.

China Star

Name: Alice W, from Edinburgh Review Date: Tue 27 January, 2009
I visited the China Star last night and I was very disappointed with the service I received.

My boyfriend and I were eating when I accidently knocked a wine glass off the table. I was embarrassed at my clumsiness and apologised to the waitrss who cleaned it up for me. Then at the end of the meal I was charged £8 for the glass. Eight frigging pounds! I have never been charged for crockery at a restaurant before and I was appalled. It seemed to suggest a suspicion that I had done it deliberately. I was in tears by the time I left, not the best end to a romantic meal. The silly thing is that I would probably have spent as much on a tip had you not treated me so unpleasantly.

The food was pretty average for what I paid too. There are plently of better places in the haymarket area - my advice is go elsewhere.

Some of the genral public may know that these guys were the owners of the goodwill a few years back, but it really has gone downhill. The food is terrible, the service horrible and above all the prices are disgraceful! The shops decoration is in supremely bad taste and the only redeeming feature is that its next to a chippie so if you find the food too disgusting you can always have fish and chips instead. If you're looking for a genuine chinese with cheap prices, try the goodwill(under new management) just a block away.

Falko Cafe Bakery

The German bakery Falko Konditorei on Bruntsfield Place in Edinburgh and in Gullane, East Lothian sells the most wonderful bread, and its Spanish almond cake is easily the best I’ve tasted.

The staff are really friendly too and know exactly what goes into all the produce. It is worth a trip out to Gullane, with a walk on the beach and then a well-deserved coffee and slice of proper Black Forest gateau.

If you haven't been here and you like Chinese, you need to try it! It is quite different to anywhere else in Edinburgh.

The food is well cooked, the selection is excellent and the service is very pleasant. Having been there a number of times since they opened, we expected the standards to drop as they so often do. The food quality has remained constant and it shows - it seems to be getting even busier than ever. Perhaps the word is spreading how good the value is. They have also become quite famous for their dumplings and with good reason.

Will be back soon.

This is a very typical Chinese restaurant in Canonmills (north of the city centre) which always seems to be just nicely busy! As it is situated near several large offices, it is very popular at lunchtimes, similarly the evening trade is often brisk!

The food is better than average and reasonably priced, but there is a special 3 course lunchtime menu for around £7, which is exceptional value. Portions are large and the service prompt.

All in all, this is a perfect place for a lunchtime treat or for those evenings when you don't want to cook, but find somewhere more special for your intimate meals!

The Restaurant has a quirky bistro feel to it, with a bright tasteful interior. Not personally being familiar with polish food the menu offered a selection of apparent authentic dishes which adds to the novelty of the experience. I had a Herring Platter starter which was pleasant, and Pierogi dumplings (I went for the traditional cottage cheese, potato, filling with fried onion and bacon; but a range of other fillings are available) for my Main course. The food was enjoyable, reasonably priced and the portions generous, particularly the size of my dining companion's main salad which was staggering.

Prawn and Apple was really tasty and the Minced Pork and Aubergine was delicious (if awfy big!) we also had Pak Choi in garlic sauce which was cooked to perfection. As courses were so big we will be enjoying it again for tea tomorrow.

I have now been waiting for an hour and a half and my food is still not here. I rang the restuarant to see what had happened and was told it would be at least another half hour! I was offered no apologies and told that if I was unhappy I could cancel the order. Asked if there was any way to speed it up and she said no. I suggested a discount or to get the food for free since by the time I get it it will have been over 2 hours I have waited, I was told there was nothing they could do, and told again that I could cancel. Had a real hankering for Japanese food, but am now starving and unhappy. Will never order from here again, should have just gone to Izzi on Lothian road!

We had 2 coffees - a latte and a cappucino. If it wasn't for the thin dusting of powder we'd not have been able to tell them apart. Coffee was very weak and lacked any flavour. I don't know if it is the beans or the preparation or both, but it wasnae nice.

Stupidly I had a tuna sandwich. The tuna mayo was brown and crispy on the edges when I opened it.
Advertised price was 1.99 but I got charged 2.20 for the baguette.

Service was okay, but a smile wouldn't go amiss!

Zero One at Telford College

Name: Mike, from West End Review Date: Tue 23 February, 2010
Wow wow wow...what a place. Ok, this place is really good, the srcipt is that SVQ or HN stundets are preparing food in the kitchens, up to a very high standard. After this the same (not THE same) are serving the food. The place is swish more than swanky. Though the price allows one to dablle in a not too bad wine selection.

For teh price there can be no better place to eat in Edinburgh than this £3.50 for a three course lunch and we are not talking mince & tatties, or £12.00 / £15.00 for 2, for a trully memorable dinner. Pick the last time you ate out for two for under £20.00 x it by 10 and you have Zero One and there amazing students. I go every week !!!!! email in advance as they now book up some two weeks in advance

In Touch Indian Restaurant

Name: Dougie Brown, from Edinburgh Review Date: Sun 07 March, 2010
My party of 4 adults and one child visited In Touch last night. Whilst the food was nice it could have been hotter., The metal serving dishes were cold but the plates were hot. There were plenty of waiters for the amount of tables, but felt that the attention to the customers could have been much better. I felt that the waiters did not want to have any visual contact with you in case you asked for something. When you did ask there was a lack of urgency for example having to remind staff three times of our first drinks order, and to have only half the order brought to us.. We had to ask yet again, for the rest of the order as some 10 minutes had lapsed and wait another 5 minutes for them to arrive. Why an order of 5 drinks cannot be delivered at once I do not know.Again during the meal we had to ask again to bring our second order of drinks and even then the order was wrong. It was not that the staff were unfriendly, they just lacked enthusiasm and all round customer service.A smile just even once would have been nice. Whilst I appreciate this was an Indian restaurant, it would have been nice to offer at least a couple of western dishes especially for the child that was with us. needless to say no tip was given, and would take alot of convinicng for us to return. I am lucky to eat out regularly, and feel what lets this restaurant down is customer service.
